Antique Late TANG Dynasty (705-907 AD) Chinese Cast Bronze Square-Form Mirror Archaic. For your consideration is a rare and very interesting early antique artifact from Medieval Imperial China. It is a mirror, a single cast of thick bronze/brass in an interesting and unusual square form. Ornamentation on the back side, with four characters in blocks and an elaborate floral scroll border.

The front, which is flat and plain, would be polished to a shine and the reflection used as a mirror, and often covered with silver for extra reflective qualities. These mirrors were highly prized at the time and considered a symbol of good fortune, as well as a shield from evil spirits. Around the 8th century AD, new forms started to appear besides the traditional circular disc, like this square form. A loop in the center of the back.

A gold thread ribbon is looped through and tied to a double bow, most likely sometime in the 19th century. The symbolism of these mirrors remained for the centuries after they were made, and were prized and exchanged as heirlooms and objects of value, and many were unearthed by farmers during the 19th and very early 20th centuries. Antique, Tang Dynasty China, second period (705-907 AD), during a time of great cultural and territorial expansion.
