Brush pots were used by Chinese scholars during the 1700's and 1800's. Some were also used to store rolled up papers. This being a large one at 13 inches tall was most certainly for that purpose. In keeping with what it is, it is carved with a scene from'The Three Kingdoms' era. In the 3rd century, between 220 AD and 280 AD, it is considered the bloodiest period in chinese history, when three warring states were vying for power. Scholars of the day wrote poems criticising the administration and wrote Daoist literature that endangered their lives, so to escape this stifling war they gathered at a bamboo grove where one of them'Ji Kang' lived in a small house. Here, they drank, praised their works and celebrated nature. Condition is very good with no damage to the artwork. All the delicately cut behind bamboo trees are unbroken, and it only has the usual small splits that do not go all the way through to the inside.
