ANTIQUE CHINESE late Qing dynasty ZUN VASE wucai ENAMELS Daoguang

This is One of a kind peace that was made to order for a wealthy Chinese family in early 19th century. The inscriptions are best wishes of longevity, prosperity in Chinese.

Also describes on the bottom portion the an. This large DOUCAI and or Famille Verte enamels porcelain spittoon of ZUN shape features a wary finely detailed painted design of archaist. Betel-chewing was a practice once common in the Peranakan Chinese community. Spittoons were an essential part of the sireh paraphernalia that comprised a box with several receptacles that contain the various ingredients used in betel-chewing. Nonyas in particular used them on a daily basis, and on weddings.

Spittoons were used for the hygienic disposal of spittle that resulted from chewing of betel leaves. Sometimes, a metal container with a handle was placed inside the spittoon for the convenient disposal of the contents.

This tall spittoon was placed on the floor and within the lower compartment of washstands in bridal chambers. Fine Qing dynasty large Chinese blue and white vase / spittoon with very unusual design and Chinese calligraphy with archaist objects in DOUCAI style enamels and dates probably to Early 19th century. 25.5 cm in diameter. Base 22 cm in diameter.
