ANTIQUE CHINESE RANK BADGE, late 19th Cent. Embroidery, ethnic, collectors

  

This is an antique Chinese embroidered civilian rank badge, dating from the late 19th Century, for the back of the robe. It shows a bird, a silver pheasant, resting on a rock or a stump over hummocks or waves of different shades of green on a silk background. The bird has its wings extended and a tail with five feathers and there is a red sun in the left hand top corner.

There are five bats of various colours flying against the background of clouds in the sky, and also two flaming pearls at ground level. The condition is very good, with little damage, which amounts to a few loose couched threads in the left hand bottom corner, and the colours are bright and not faded. The badge measures 30 x 25 cms.
