Chinese Bronze statue of Guandi (Guan Yu), late Qing/early Republic era, 24cm/9.5inches high. The statue depicts Guandi, the God of War, the deified form of the Three-Kingdoms general Guan Yu (died 220 AD). In life his actions earned him a reputation as exemplar of faithfulness and reliability. The God is also worshipped as protector of merchants, and shrines dedicated to him were known as'Temples of Literature and Martial Arts'.In this figure he strikes a dynamic pose with a typically fierce facial expression and a finely modelled thick beard. His raised sword hovers protectively over a bat held in his open hand. In this instance the bat symbolises love of virtue. Guandi's stalwart frame is encased in an elaborate garment and his booted right foot stands on the back of a vanquished devil-adversary.
The statue is in good, undamaged condition and has a mellow age patina. The item "Chinese Bronze statue, Guandi (Guan Yu), Late Qing/Republic, H24cm" is in sale since Wednesday, November 3, 2021. This item is in the category "Antiques\Asian/Oriental Antiques\Chinese\Figurines & Statues".
