Chinese lacquered wooden box, late Ming, early 17th century, decorated on the lid with four ladies and a child on a terrace, with trees issuing from rockwork, all within a black framework with gilt panels of flowers on a hatched background; the front portion with a man seated on a terrace with three ladies standing and five attendants with trees issuing from rockwork, all within a black framework with gilt panels of flowers on a hatched background, the foot with panels of flowers in gilt on a red background, the end panels of flowers on a red background within a black framework with gilt panels of flowers on a hatched background with square metal handles, the back decorated with a lily, width: 17 3/16in.
