This is one of the most ornate Chinese carvings I have ever handled and a classic in late Qing Dynasty design. You wont find anything close to it on the internet. This dragon is depicted crouching. The head show his mouth slightly open with curved tongue. A dragon neck and head flow off the back of the dragons head as a mane.
The shoulder and haunches are decorated with a curled dragon ending in a dragon Tao form face, one of the many Han form designs on this figure. The dragons chest is decorated with a Tao form face. The dragons sides are decorated in Han design linear dragon designs. The tail is in the form of a two headed dragon.
The piece is finished in a black lacquer finish. A beautiful piece of extremely ornate Qing Dynasty art. The figure is in excellent condition for its age. There is very minor cracking in some of the finish and the finish has darkened with age. There are worn spots in the design from being handled as would be expected on an old piece. For being nearly 150 years old the condition is outstanding. Please study the photographs, they are part of the description. This would be a finer piece in a collection of wood carved dragon figures. Dimensions: Height 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm), Length 10 3/4 inches (27.5 cm), Width 4 1/4 inches (11.5 cm).
